Beauty Portrait

As a photographer you probably aspired to try the fashion genre. Though it requires professional skills (both for taking the picture and post-process it later), it can be done in a quite simple way.

Full of inspiration, I’ve asked my favorite model to come over for a “beauty shot” session. Luckily, she was available, and as soon as she gave the “ok”, I worked on preparing the set.

Unfortunately, I don’t own a full-frame camera (which is amazing for this kind of shots). I own a Canon EOS 7D which does a fair job. I mounted a Canon Speedlite 580EX II on a stand with a 28” rectangle softbox by Lastolite. The softbox was positioned right in-front of the model (higher than her with app. 45° downwards). This was my main light source.

Next, I’ve placed a silver reflector in-front of the model but underneath the softbox. The reflector was facing 45° upward, thus creating a “clamp” look. The silver reflector was to function as a fill-light from underneath (since the main light comes from above).

BTW, Since my softbox is rather small, the best way I can use it is in headshots.

So, I was ready. My lovely model came and we started to shoot (after applying a little make-up job and styling her hair).

For this kind of shot (studio portrait with artificial light), I close my aperture to about 7.1-11. Since I don’t need any ambient light, my shutter speed is about 1/200 (max sync with the flash). ISO is low (200 in this case). WB is set to flash (I shoot in RAW format, so I can handle the WB later).

My camera was positioned right between the softbox and the reflector…and I was using a tripod so I could get the maximum sharpness.

The lens…..I think there are some ideal lenses for this kind of shot: Canon EF 50mm 1/1.2L USM, Canon EF 85mm 1/1.2L USM II and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II.

Since I don’t have any of these lenses (…yet…), I use my macro lens….yes…my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro USM…an amazing lens with exceptional sharpness.

You can see the lighting diagram here at strobox.com.

The shooting was amazing. Both the model and the lighting was superb. The next step was to post-process the image in Adobe Photoshop…(which took a few hours)…but was worth it.

Hope you enjoy,

A few days ago I went for another shooting session with a lovely model at the wonderful park in Ra’annana, Israel.
We took a few shots in various posing. This head-shot is an example of one of the photos we took.
I used here my trusty Canon EOS 7D and my Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens. Since it was sunset, I also used my Canon Speedlite 580EXII flash (with a 1/2 CTO gel and w/b set to “Flash”). The flash was diffused by a shoot-thru umbrella triggered by Pixel’s Pawn wireless flash trigger.
This type of a downward head-shot is pretty common, simple to compose and delivers wonderful results.
In this case, the flash with the umbrella is pointing towards the model and lit her face and leaving the surrounding underexposed.
The next step is the post-processing. I’ve smoothened her skin, emphasized her eyes and giving a slight green and warm tint to the shadows to give a fashion-like overall look.
If you wish to see the settings, you can view it on strobox.com.
Hope you love :)

A classic black and white portrait of a female model.

This shot was taken using my Canon EOS 7D and a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM at 70mm, f/11, 1/200 and 100 ISO.
I used a diffused off-camera flash (580EX II - triggered wirelessly) for the main light-source and a silver-reflector as a fill-light to light the shadows in her face. Here’s the set-up…

The next step was working with an image-proccessing software to convert to a black-and-white and emphasis certain parts in the face to maximize the expression (such as the eyes).
One of things that I like about this photo is the way it composed - Even that it’s cropped, the result is pleasing.
